    Is it okay to have fun with your blog posts? The answer is YES! A thousand times over! You’ll see this tactic to engage users employed by small time bloggers all the way up to the big boys like Google because it works. You wouldn’t necessarily want to do this on your main website, but when it comes to your blog the rules are different. You can be much more wide open and use a number of different engagement techniques, and having fun is one of the best. There is a way to do it correctly though so that you do not damage your brand, because it can backfire if you do not pay attention.

    The first rule is don’t overdo it. If trying to create funny blog posts is all you ever do, the value of them will be diminished. It can also do damage to your brand because it may cause people to take relevant, business related, posts less seriously. The general rule of thumb is no more than one per month. If it is done correctly, that is all it will take because it will have a shelf life of three to four days beyond being posted.

    These fun blogs meant to engage in a different way work because people like to have fun. They like to chime in with comments, but doesn’t always feel comfortable doing so on business related posts. This is an easy in to get those people participating. For those that comment, if you answer, they will return to see the reply in most cases. If you create something really good, you can bet they will share it with their friends. This is free links and exposure which you can’t put a price on.

    You want to make sure you don’t poke fun at competitors or specific individuals. Shine the light on yourself and you’ll be safe. This avoids any nasty confrontations and shows that although you are a serious business, you can take a step back now and then and laugh at yourself. People like that kind of humility and it goes a long way to engendering a positive relationship with your clients. Who wants to deal with someone that never makes a mistake?

    How do you do that though? It’s really easy! It can be making fun of a picture of your self in a hideous golf outfit. It can be your relating a story about how you spent three hours trying to fix something on your computer only to find out your 6 year old fixed it with one click. It can be something about a product you are overstocked on and have to move because you thought it would be the next hottest thing in the world – so long as you poke fun at yourself! It’s also a great way to move that product in relation to a sale because undoubtedly, someone will find it useful.

    All business all the time is boring. Spice things up a little, keeping it in good taste of course, and watch how much your engagement improves!  You can have fun and it still be work – if it didn’t work would Google be filled with so many cool little Easter eggs and pulled the wool over your eyes posts as it is? Take a cue from the leader, having fun is totally acceptable!
