Yes, it is true that lethargic approach to SEO will cost you dearly. Most webmasters that try to optimize their own websites succumb to this vice. What do we mean by lethargic SEO? It just means a lazy approach to SEO or indolent or laid-back approach to SEO. When it comes to optimization of your website, you cannot afford to take a laidback approach. You have to be on your feet alert all the time looking or new ways and means of optimizing your website, getting more back links and enhancing your online visibility.
What are the signs of lethargic SEO?
Some of the common signs that we can observe include but not limited to the following. One of the signs is the use of same title tags for the entire website from the index page to site map. This will show that either the one who has optimized the website is ignorant of SEO or just too laidback to take the trouble to come up with unique title tags for each page. Title tags are very important for Google and other search engines. If one is going to be careless about such an important aspect of SEO, then one cannot expect online success.
Avoid using the same title tag for all the pages; page titles are highly important for search engines and by giving the same page title to all the pages you reduce the positive results that you can get. So make sure to come up with a unique title tag for each page.
Another similar mistake is to have the same set of keywords in the meta keywords tag of all the pages. If you have the same keywords in all the pages, then the search engines that rely on the meta tags will be mislead. You may not be able to get the right webpage listed for the right keywords.
Poorly written content with poor keyword density or over stuffing of keywords is yet another sign of lethargic SEO. It is a clear sign that the one who optimized that website did not take the trouble to learn about the appropriate keyword density and apply it to their web pages. Such a half baked approach will not lead us to success. Your website will be no way near the top 10 or 20 results with such an approach.
Poor site URLs and poor file naming conventions. If your website URLs are going to read index, index1, index2, index3, etc., then that is the best to way to pull yourself down the search results. Moreover, all your files including the image files should be named appropriately using appropriate keywords. Absence of Alt attribute for the images is yet another sign of laidback SEO.
