Niche specific SEO is important, as we pointed out in our last post. Let’s take a look at an example – the weight loss industry.
As mentioned, industry specific knowledge is crucial for successful SEO, particularly in highly competitive industries. One of the niche industries that is always heavily saturated with competition – weight loss industry. This is one of the most lucrative businesses out there, given people’s obsession with weight, and as such there are thousands of websites that promote various services and / or products in this niche. There is such a high level of competition in this industry that new websites being launched don’t stand a chance unless they target an under served niche and are highly specific. Unfortunately for most webmasters, lack of industry specific knowledge makes their site redundant and they don’t stand a chance.
Many webmasters throw up their hands, give up the SEO battle, and opt to utilize other options such as paid traffic. Although this may initially meet their purpose, such an approach is ultimately harmful for your business because the cost of the paid traffic will shoot up every month with the increasing competition and if you cease paying, your traffic will cease. You have to also be investing in driving some organic traffic to your website. The best approach will blend both organic traffic as well as paid traffic until organic traffic becomes strong enough to support your site.
You must be as specific as possible and stick as close as possible to your line of products or services when optimizing your website. don’t be tempted to wasted time, effort and money on keywords that you have no chance of ranking for. Utilize long tail keyword phrases and look for search patterns among your primary demographic. This will reduce the circle of competition that your weigh loss website has to fight. If you are selling fat loss pills, let your optimization focus on this product and avoid other keywords.
Trying to optimize for highly competitive keywords in an effort to drive greater volume of traffic does not work so well especially when the competition level is too high. You will simply increase your number of competitors while diluting the effectiveness of your main target keywords. Don’t try to snitch traffic from websites dedicated to those who are interested in weight loss solutions focused around diet programs and weight loss programs. They don’t want ‘pills’ or they’d be looking for ‘pills’. You want to target the fast weight loss and easy weight loss seekers. Your special and specific product is weight loss pills, so concentrate on that and try to get people who are looking for weight loss pills.
There are opposing opinions regarding this approach of using highly focused optimization efforts. Some SEO professionals like to optimize your website for secondary keywords in an effort to drive secondary traffic to your website. However, the most important factor to be taken into consideration is what works the best for your website and that is the approach you should take. If the nature of your product or service should benefit through secondary keywords then you can try to blend both (such as a new exercise routine blended with a meal plan). Just be aware that secondary traffic may or may not bring the desired conversion rates. Again, traffic for traffic sake is no good for any website if the conversion ratio fails to increase. Always spend your money where the results are.
