There are number of myths surrounding SEO and some of them will make us wonder how people can be so naïve to believe such exaggerated myths. One of the reasons why people readily believe such myths is the desperation to fight the online competition. They are ready to buy anything as long as it promises them good Pagerank and good SERP position. Some of the companies do take advantage of these desperate business owners.
One of the major myths believes that Meta Tags will work the magic for your website and make it rank high in search engines. Meta tags may be having its positive effects on SEO but you cannot rely totally on meta tags for your websites ranking. Moreover, you cannot deceive the search engines by adding loads and loads of keywords in the Meta tags.
The second myth believes in multiple submissions to search engines on regular basis. There are people who advocate that in order to keep the listing fresh in search engines we need to submit our sites regularly to search engines even after it is indexed. In reality, you need not make multiple submissions to search engines. In fact, you need not even submit your website to search engines. All that you need to do to get your site listed is to make a website that is already indexed to link to you from their website and the spiders will automatically visit your site and index it. Search engine algorithms are written in such a way that the search engine spiders follow the link whether you like it or not; you can however block your site voluntarily using robot.txt. If it is not blocked, your site will certainly receive the spiders to index you and depending on your site’s quality and other parameters, ranking will be assigned for your website. If at all any submission is required, then it is directory submissions and not search engine submission.
Guaranteed position in the top 10 results in Google in a short period for a highly competitive keyword phrase is another myth. No one can actually guarantee results in top 10 position in search engines as popular as Google for popular keyword phrases. This is not so easily possible; though it is not an impossible feat, it would take a long time depending on the nature of your keyword. The choice of keyword for which you get listed in important, anyone can get your site listed in top positions for some keyword phrases that are rarely used. The real challenge is in getting to the top positions for the most competitive keywords and remain there.
The next myth makes us believe that Flash is totally bad for our site. Actually it is not Flash, that is bad for a site, but the absence of text is what is bad; however do not make your site 100% Flash.
There are number of other myths, which can be easily warded off by using a bit of common sense approach.
