  • SEO and Child's Play, Part 1

SEO is Like Child’s Play – Harder Than it Looks

Ever play hopscotch when you were a kid? It’s not as easy as the little kids make it out to be. Don’t believe me? Try it sometime. You have to hop in one foot, bend over, turn, skip, and avoid stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk to ensure your maternal parent’s spinal health.

Jacks are the same way. I tried to teach my daughter to play jacks last year, and I guess I was rusty. She was beating the pants off of me inside of ten minutes. You have to bounce the ball just right, scoop up the jacks in the correct order, and catch the ball – again, it’s not as easy as I remember!

Video games. Eye hand coordination at its peak, to my mind – I have dim memories of my brother on our original Atari, mouth half open, eyes wide and staring as he navigated the games ins and outs. I never could stand video games – I get wayyyy too tense and panicky. I can’t seem to avoid the snapping jaws of whatever is chasing, and I am usually sweating from nerves by the time my last man gets eaten alive.

SEO is like that. It’s not a simple process – A. Do this. B. Do that. It’s a fluid, ongoing process that requires you to be able to multi task and manage a bunch of different aspects of the game.

I did find one online game I play with my daughter. It features a penguin on ice skates who owns a diner. She has to seat customers, take their orders, serve food, bus tables and collect tips. Each level of the game features a more crowded dining room, and you have to keep a close eye on the clientele to keep faces from turning red and tempers exploding.

I actually got rather involved in the game, to my daughter’s dismay. Each day in the diner requires that a certain quota be met in tips, and the speed and alacrity with which you discharge your duties determines the size and quantity of these rewards. You can use excess profits to buy faster skates, more comfortable seats, and wide screen TVs to promote customer satisfaction.

I won the game. The first one I EVER won! I managed to keep my cool, multitask and get a ticket back home to the South Pole on a passing ice floe. I was pretty proud of myself, and even my daughter gave me a pat on the back. How does this tie in with SEO? Keep reading….
