Does your business blog always need to be strictly about your business? There are some who believe that it is a hard and fast truth that business blogs should never deviate from strictly presenting content about the products or services a business sells. Others take an approach that a little variety is okay for your business – even a good thing you should strive for. While variety is good, there is such a thing as good and bad variety which we will focus on today.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with periodically lacing your business blog with some content that is not strictly designed to convert. That is great news for webmasters that provide daily posts because it does become difficult to constantly create new topics solely focused on converting. Blog posts that discuss the history of a company, feature some info regarding an employee (With their consent of course) or that discuss your business’ projected role in community activities and/or initiatives over the next few months or a year are valid and valuable to you blog.
You can even draw from the news to create posts. Suppose you are in an industry that is heavily dependant on the trucking industry – and you see that fuel prices will rise enough that you are going to be forced to raise your prices to cover that expense – that is a valid topic to discuss on your business blog. The reason that holds true is that it helps prepare and explain why you may be having a price increase in the near future. If people understand your prices are going up due to production factors beyond your control they will not suffer “sticker shock” at the increase and will appreciate having advance notice to prepare for a possible increase.
The main thing to keep in mind when straying a little off path with posts to your business blog is that in some way it should at least loosely tie into your business in a peripheral sense. Diversity is good because it is something that keeps people reading just to see what is coming up next. On the other hand an example of straying off topic in a bad way would be doing a write up of your opinion on a sporting event that hasn’t even a sliver of a relationship to your business.
Of course the absolute worst things to post on your business – unless you are in these two specific industries – is anything about politics or religion. The net is a global community made up of people of many different ideologies – and it is never wise to post anything that rocks the boat the wrong way. Posting opinions on those topics is best done on a personal blog if it must be done at all. Not everyone agrees with this, but more companies that have dipped their toes in those waters have licked their wounds than raised a victory banner.
