  • Deep Linking 101

Websites with inbound links to the home page only may have difficulty with rankings suffering as search engines see the cluster and can get the wrong impression.
They may assume that your site has little to offer and low on information. If you have done a really, really great job of link generating, but have them all linking to your home page, there could even be the appearance of spamming.

On the other hand, a website with multiple links inbound to different pages is much more likely to be considered a valuable site. The different pages could be directly relevant to different niche audiences, and you could reach specific groups with various interests. If they link to specific pages of your site that gives your site more authority!

You have to remember when acquiring deep links that not all pages on your site are equally deserving of links. There will be some pages you shouldn’t link to at all, because they are pages that are only valid when the viewer arrives at them through a natural progression – a page dealing with a specific problem should be preceded by an appropriate page leading up to that, for example.

Every internal page that has inbound deep links should have highly visible links to show the visitor how to get to main pages. This will encourage them to stay on the site. If they hit your landing page and decide that they would like to check out your home page, that guidepost should be there to point them in the right direction. Links that say  ‘More…’, ‘Home’ or ‘Back to top’ can be pivotal tools to keep your customers on the site for as long as possible.

Natural inbound links have a major impact on determining your Page Rank. You can and should have your very best inbound links zero in on your home page. Then you should start concentrating on building rank on deeper pages using internal linking combined with other inbound links relevant to each page. Do outbound linking from pages that already have a lesser ranking, so you don’t bleed your PageRank away.

You can designate a page for outbound links that are lesser in value – some reciprocal links, links from family and friends, sponsors, etc. A promotional type page can have no-follows on each link or you could even no-index  the entire page This will help minimize linking deficiencies caused by unhelpful links.

Deep linking is a powerful tool, and if you properly manage deep links you can increase your traffic as well as theamount of time visitors stay on your site. Use deep links to build your Page Rank and search engine popularity while making your site more navigable.
