Link Juice. We want it. We need it! We can get it, boost it and pass it along.
Think of Page Rank as an indicator of how high voltage a site is. The more juice they have, the more electricity they pass along to you. Some sites are veritable transformers, and can light you up like a Christmas tree. Other have more moderate effects; but hook a few together and you can up the power.
I consider my site as a central command center, with power sources coming in from authoritative sites to feed me juice. I have a series of power strips connected to my command center, and I plug my different pages into these strips to draw from my home page’s juice.
I don’t want to drain too much electricity from my home page, or my PageRank indicator might dim. So I only plug really important pages into my power strips, and run really long extension cords in from other sites to juice some of my lower pages.
I can round-robin some of my pages also to conserve power, linking pages in rings and keeping the juice flowing. Linking vertically straight down will gradually diminish my juice, but horizontal links keep sharing power back and forth.
What I really need is links in from as many strong PageRank sites as possible, and I need to confine outbound links to pages where I won’t be losing juice.
You have to consider outbound links that have little or no relevance to your site that you feel compelled to list ( family or friends’ sites, reciprocal links that were ill advised from the early days of your site. A wonderful way to handle these is to institute a page on your site just for these links. You can link to it from just a few other pages, and call it the ‘Friends and Supporters of ————(your site name)’.
This is by no means a comprehensive view of the complexity of linking for juice and PageRank, but it should point you in the right direction. Many people find it helpful to visualize a pyramid, with PageRank flowing down from the Home page and filtering through links to the important pages. Feeders from the outside provide extra bursts of power when needed.
Others see it as tiers of pages, with the Home page ranking almost even with several other key pages and a crisscrossing web of links down through the levels.
If you can get sites with high PageRank to link to you voluntarily and organically, you have just juiced your site. Maintaining the power and judiciously driving it deeper into your site will increase your chances of favorable PageRank yourself.
Once you have achieved your own PageRank you will see an enormous leap in your SERPs placement and more links will come. Many sites will link OUT to sites with high PageRank just to get the ball rolling, and you can take advantage of these – just make sure they are relevant links!
Track your links and watch your juice power grow. Eventually you will be the one courted for a boost of your power!
Happy Linking!
