You’ve climbed to the front page of Google and you’re still not getting the kind of traffic you think you should. It’s not an unheard of problem. The fact is, making the first page of results for your keywords doesn’t mean you’re going to get traffic stats that necessarily correspond to what you think they should be. Yes, good rankings will drive some traffic, but a lot of it has to do with return traffic and traffic generated by your site being shared as well.
Remember, Traffic is a Funnel, and Not All Visitors Convert
Complaints from web masters that they have good search engine ranking but the website traffic is a constant. This can raise doubts in many people as to whether or not they are doing anything right. Can such a thing happen? Should you not get good traffic to your website once you have reached the top of the search results for the right keywords? Why does this happen and what can you do to address it?
Before you panic, you need to step back and take a look at things objectively. There are number of factors that control your websites organic traffic levels. The first factor of course is your website’s online visibility. If your website is not visible enough, then you cannot possibly expect visitors. So you should first be seen easily. Being seen is only valuable, however, if you are being see for the right things.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not enough just to be seen online or to have good visibility online which brings us to the second factor which is the choice of keywords. If your website is not optimized for the right choice of keywords, then the traffic that comes to your website will be poor quality traffic. People will go to your site, but they will only go once. They will quickly see that they are not finding what they expected to and leave. This will be reflected in your bounce rate. Imagine people going to your site expecting to find garden hoses but finding nothing but pet supplies. Would you return to a site that got you in using misleading keywords? Probably not, and neither will anyone else.
If you have good search engine ranking for the right choice of keywords, but still the traffic level is not desirable enough then you should know that your website has very poor click through rate. What this means is your website will get visitors only when users click on the search result. This is where most webmasters fail and never even realize it. This has to do with poor choice of titles to a certain degree.
