    For the most part, all search engines are designed to index text. They assess text quite well, but  they cannot “read” images like text and forget about videos. We have as much text as possible around the video – almost like a pool of text. This text should be keyword rich in the form of title and the transcript of the video. Some  sites have flash based transcript of video, but in general, it is not a good idea when it comes to SEO. It is better to have the transcript in a format that can be easily crawled and read  by search engines.

    The next thing we need to consider is search psychology, When people search for videos, they almost always add the word video into their search. For example, if you have a ‘horse training video’ on your page, the text that you are using around the video should contain this keyword phrase as one of the main keywords that you are targeting. It should also be present in your description, page title and keywords list in the meta data for the best results.

    Try to build up your video with as many contextual links as possible. Keep them all pointing to your video both within your website and from other locations as well. Don’t forget to add a video sitemap so that the search engines know exactly where to look for video content within your website. Avoid uploading video in a format other than Flash whenever possible. Make sure that you have the main keywords in the URL when the video is uploaded. This will save some confusion and headaches later. Store all video files in a single directory. By doing this, search engines will be able to find the other videos on your site quicker and get them indexed as well.

    If you have your videos in a page that also contains other videos, be sure to include a captivating thumbnail so that your video gets the attention of the users. Granted, a captivating thumbnail has no direct link to SEO, it will catch the attention of people more than the same exact video being promoted without a thumbnail.

    Provide your visitors with the ability to add reviews for your video, comment on it and leave feedback. You really need to make sure that you moderate the user feedback and reviews. If you allow a space for feedback, you give yourself a chance of getting fresh content added regularly in the form of feedback and reviews – and you know already that search engines love fresh content to crawl through!
