While we are taking a deeper look at keywords, we need to make sure that we have a clear understanding on the different types of keywords and how these keywords will help or affect the performance of a website. We can categorize keywords based on the user search trends, the types of keywords discussed here are not categorical types, we can come up with many such classifications based on users search pattern which again can vary from one industry to another. Having said that, we can categorize keywords in to three types: short keyword string, long keyword string and localized keyword string.

What is short keyword string? We consider a keyword string short when they have just one or two terms or words. This type of keywords normally faces very high level of competition irrespective of the niche. Getting top ranking for these keywords or reaching top ten positions for such keywords will involve consistent and highly focused efforts. It will also be a very time consuming process. In other words, it is not going to be all that easy to get to the top for short string keywords. This does not mean that it is not possible to get top ranking for such keywords but we are only trying to make it clear that it is going to be challenging to take on to such ranking goals.

The next keywords type is long string keywords. When the keyword string has three or more terms of words we can consider such strings as long tail keywords. It has been proven that long tail keywords bring more targeted traffic to websites as opposed to short string keywords. As the string length increases the competition level will decrease. However the problem is that the traffic rate will also decrease. In other words the number people that use exactly matching long string keywords will be much lesser when compared to the former type of keywords. You need to therefore balance between long tailed keywords and short keyword strings to ensure that you drive steady flow of traffic to your website. This is where you need professional keywords analysis. Your keywords analysis should have an effective list of keywords that can send good overall traffic that is highly targeted.

The third type of keywords is localized keywords or keywords with geographic quantifiers. This type of keywords should be selected if your services or area of coverage is limited to a specific geographic zone. This will effectively reduce the overall competition for your keywords as you will be competing only with those websites that serve the same region as yours. It is always best to include geographic quantifiers as and when possible.

Good keyword research or good keywords analysis will take into account all these factors. As you can see here why we emphasized in earlier articles that you should always use manual keyword research service and not rely on automated keyword research tools.
